Kent Wing has started it’s second Sports Leaders UK Lowland Expedition Leadership course with the first residential session taking place over the weekend at DFTDC Manston. Kent has a long history of running expedition leadership courses, specifically the Basic Expedition Leader award which was re-branded a few years ago. This year, our course candidates are mainly Staff Cadets, young people who are over the age of 18 but are still cadets, and a couple of Civilian Instructors.

The aim of the award is to provide those who already have an interest in the outdoors with the skills necessary to lead teams of young people on expeditions; whether that is for the Bronze or Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award or another charitable purpose.

This was an intensive weekend with a mixture of classroom theory and practical sessions on camping stoves & cooking, tents, leadership and communication, rucksack packing, clothing, access and conservation and alternative methods of teaching navigation.

The Candidates will attend regular training weekends and individual days, culminating in October when they will undertake their own expedition, showing that they’ve learnt and can put into practice everything that they’ve covered during the training weekends.
