On Thursday 20th November 2014 one of the Kent Police Armed Response Units paid the Canterbury Air Cadets a visit.
Amongst all the equipment we were able to see, they had their methods of entry kit including “the enforcer” (commonly seen on T.V.) and their riot gear comprising of multiple different shields, batons, pepper spray, tasers and even rubber bullets.
The Armed Response Units in Kent have on average 20 – 30 call outs every month between them, covering a range of events from armed crime to emergency first aid, and humane animal destruction. A team can expect to be on call for between 9 and 11 hours whilst wearing an extra weight of 7 stone in equipment.
After the short talk came the part everyone was looking forward to, trying on some of the gear. Unsurprisingly the cadets all agreed that it was too heavy and didn’t fancy going for a mile run in full dress, something that might have been good practice for the Wing Cross Country competition!
